Cake decorators in Calgary, Alberta, have been inundated with offers of money, gifts and even freebies.
It’s a phenomenon known as “The Cake Decorating Boom,” and it started with a recent visit to the Calgary Downtown Bakery and Café.
A woman approached the owner with a gift of free cake decorations and cakes for the first time.
“It was a little bit surreal, and I didn’t expect to be getting so much money,” said Laura Sorensen, who is the owner of Cake Decoration Boutique.
She received a package of more than $2.5,000, including a cake with her name on it, and two $500 wedding rings for the bride.
Sorensensen said she has been receiving requests for free cakes and decorations for years.
“We’re always looking for new ways to give away things.
We’ve done cakes for wedding receptions, we do cakes for graduations, we have a free wedding cake,” she said.
The city has been hit with more than 10,000 requests for wedding cakes and free cakes, said city councillor Joe Colley.
“So far this year we’ve had a total of 10,086 cakes, and there’s been a lot of people who’ve gone to the bakery and said ‘I just want to give you a little gift, just a little extra,” Colley said.
“A lot of them have been given cakes by people who have been here for years and years and decades.”
While the requests for cake decorations vary, Colley and his colleague, Coun.
Geoff Meekins, are hopeful they’ll soon see a rise in demand.
“The trend has definitely gone up since we’ve been here.
We’re getting requests for birthday cakes and weddings,” Meeks said.
Colley said the city has recently started offering free cake decoration at all of its downtown restaurants.
“When we started the city was still in its infancy.
We have a very small staff, and we’re working on a lot more,” he said.
